Interview: Victor Blanco Celebrity Stylist

The inspiration for my last post about the Cambridge Satchel came from a Spanish blogger, stylist and writer whom I follow. His name is Victor Blanco and he was kind enough to answer some questions about his accomplishments in the competitive world of fashion and celebrity styling.

Born in 1984 he is the perfect example of a self made success. He has been in the industry for over 8 years now slowly but steadily making his way through the fierce world of fashion. I first discovered Victor at an after party for the winter edition of Barcelona’s 080 Fashion Week in 2009. He was dressed to the nines and hard to miss in Jimmy Choo zebra print stilettos and a magenta fur coat. I asked for his picture (sorry for the awful quality) but found out about his career in fashion only a year and a half later when I saw him again at the Valencia Fashion Week in September 2011 and put the pieces together.

Since then I have been a faithful follower and have seen Victor move from Barcelona to Madrid, get down from his famous heels in order to adopt a more professional look; write and publish a book and increase his client portfolio admirably throughout the process.
I have always wanted to know how people become the fashion experts and icons that we read about on Vogue, well I have a feeling that it all starts with a story like Victor’s. I wish him all the best and hope to see him up there with the very best and I’m sure we will, sometime soon.

I hope you enjoy the interview!

How does one turn a passion for fashion into a full time occupation?
I believe that fashion, like all other art forms, comes as a gift. You may enjoy singing, painting, designing, etc. but you need that “something special” that allows you to make your dreams come true. Even as a boy I’ve always felt like something drew me towards fashion. Little by little you just do everything you can to learn more and more until with luck, (and thank goodness!) you succeed and turn it into a career and the recurring theme in the melody of your life, or leitmotiv. In my case: “Fashion is my passion”

Who was your 1st client and what was the process like?
My 1st known client was Ana Fernández, an actress from the Spanish TV show “Los Protegidos”. I contacted her via Facebook and developed a relationship which eventually led to her trusting me with her styling for the premiere of the movie COCO AVANT CHANEL, and for the Málaga Spanish film festival after that. Her looks were very fun but now that I have grown and I look back, I would have done things a bit differently. With the contacts I have developed since I could have gotten even more shine out of the outfits but she still looked fabulous and felt beautiful which is what matters in the end and in addition she got a lot of attention from the press.

Why did you kick your heels to the curb? Do you think you could have gotten to where you are now without them? Do you think you will ever put them back on?
I left the heels behind because everything in life has a beginning and an end and it was time. They helped me show the world that I’m different, they were my marketing campaign and they helped me sign a contract with my editor to write a book. Now that I have further established myself and represent and am responsible for my client’s image. I want to be known for my work and not as “the man in the heels”. At age 27 I have accomplished more than most can say so it is frustrating when all that people know me for is the shoes. My CV is so much more than that.

Why did you decide to move to Madrid? What was Barcelona missing? Do you think your career has benefited noticeably from this change?
I had been thinking about it for a while. Madrid is where the actresses are, a.k.a. my clients. I remember Soraya (singer) and Carla Nieto (actress) saying: “come, come!”. So in February 2011 I made the decision to move since it is only a 2,30h AVE ride to my house in Barcelona.
It has made a great difference. Barcelona is a great place to live but Madrid is where the showrooms, the press, the events and my clients are. As soon as I got here I met with Miren Ibarguren (actress) and Carmen Ruiz (actress) for example and it was much easier to dress them than it was from Barcelona. Sometimes the dresses wouldn’t fit right and I would have to run around trying to find new ones in time…it has made things much easier and I don’t regret it.

How did you get the idea to write a book and how did you make it happen?  How is it different from other style books?
The subject came up while talking to my friend, the journalist Máxim Huertas. He has just published his first novel and since I wanted to, I thought: why not? He gave me some tips about how I should do it and I set to work. In a week I had signed the contract with Ediciones B from the Zeta Group to write “SIN COMPLEJOS”. They gave me the opportunity and the truth is that I’m extremely happy to be the first Spanish Celebrity Stylist to publish a book. It is a great honor.

6)       ¿Cuáles fueron tus tendencias favoritas del 2011? ¿Con cuáles estás obsesionado para el 2012?
What were you favorite 2011 trends and which ones are you obsessed with for 2012?
It has been made clear that THE trend has been (and still is) color blocking. It has been great for color lovers like me. It has been great fun and a luxury to play with Gucci pieces as well as other designers who have come up with such marvelous reinterpretations of the trend. Of course I have been following the trend this year as well! There is nothing better than a good fluo piece or a bright color to tie in and spice up a good styling job!

What is the next step in your career? Do you ever think about moving to the US, London, Paris, etc. at some point?
I’m working on it. I’m in contact with agencies and other media in the States, where I have many more contacts tan I do in Spain and I see myself moving to LA sometime in the future. Stylists have so much more available to them there. It is a whole new world. I’ve been opening many interesting doors for the past 2 years in Spain but I’m tired of having to fight so much for every small thing. I want to be able to work more comfortably, with US actresses. I am very ambitious to grow and I look forward to starting new projects aimed this way in the future. I want my brand VB to grow and offer more services. This said I will never abandon my Spanish clients. I would love to have a team in Spain to manage things here if I move to the States.

cambridge fluo satchel

This bag has been popping up everywhere! I finally went online and looked it up. Its really not as expensive as I thought it would be (100<x<170 euros)compared to other "it bags". Here is the web page:
http://www.cambridgesatchel.co.uk/shop/collections/the-batchel

I think its only worth it for the Fluo Collection, and that is what I've seen Hanneli Mustaparta http://www.hanneli.com/, Carolina Engman http://www.fashionsquad.com/, Victor Blancohttp://thelastitboy.valenciafashionweek.com/and other bloggers in. My faves are yellow and green. Check them:

What is really cool is that like with the L.V. bags you can emboss them, a.k.a. get your initials (or whatever you want) embroidered on the side, and for cheap!! I believe its 5 pounds per letter with a max of 20 if you choose to emboss more than 4. Pretty cool!! They also sell bags with imperfections like scratches and such for around half the price, so they may very well be worth a look.

Usually I post my own pictures on this blog, however, none of these are mine.

Hair and nails trials

In london I bought a hair donut that pretty much works like this:
This is what is looks like on me, I tried it out for the 1st time tonight:
This other one is done more losely...

And then I got these Sephona stick on nails for X-mas and I tried them on today:
They are 7euros I think so they are fun and a cheap alternative to WAH nails for example =)

I tried to hold cool stuff to show you my nails, can you tell?

 P.S. New Shoes too!!

I'm editing this 7 days after to say that I took my nails off today and they come off by really scrubbing with regular nail polish remover, it probably works better with the acetone kind because its stronger. They weren't coming off completely, but they did look worn out, they might have lasted for the 11 days it said on the package...
